The First Day Of Spring 2023

Welcome Spring; a new season of growth and change. Spring Equinox 2023

Today; Monday, March 20 2023 marks the first day of spring in the Northern Hemisphere. According to the astronomical calendar today at 5:24 p.m. EDT, spring officially begins. The first day of spring means we will begin seeing more daylight and less darkness. Since the winter solstice, which marked the day with the shortest amount of daylight, the daylight hours have gradually been getting longer. However, the nighttime darkness has still been longer than the daylight. The spring equinox brings about a change when the amount of daylight will now be longer than the darkness. This is why spring is a celebration of rebirth as the light begins to win over the darkness. As darkness fades and light prevails the land awakens again with trees beginning to bud, new growth of plants emerging from the ground, and spring flowers showing their colors in the garden.

The spring equinox is also commonly referred to as the vernal equinox. The word vernal means new or fresh, relating to new beginnings or a fresh start. There are new signs of life in spring when the landscape begins to wake from its long winter slumber. New growth begins to emerge from the ground and soon there will be colorful flowers and plants filling the gardens.

For those of us in the green industry such as landscapers, gardeners, and lawn care professionals; spring opens the doors to begin working on our passion once again. Soon the sun will shine down more and more, grass will be growing vigorously, landscape beds will need to be refreshed with some new and exciting plants and mulch, and work can begin on that backyard retreat or garden. We will once again begin digging in the soil. Spring means new life, growth, and change.

As we enter this time of new life and growth in our lives we can reflect on the joy that comes with gardening.

Welcome Spring!
