Check Out February's Full Snow Moon Tonight

Updated: Mar 3, 2021

Tonight and early tomorrow morning February's full 'Snow Moon' will shine bright. According to The Old Farmer's Almanac, "February’s full Snow Moon will reach its peak in the early morning hours of Saturday, February 27." USA Today suggest that the actual moment the 'Snow Moon' will reach its full moon phase is at 3:19 a.m. EST on Saturday morning.

The full moon in February is referred to as the Snow Moon because February is typically the snowiest month in the US. February not only has its own accumulating snowfall but adds to the accumulation already on the ground from January. The Old Farmer's Almanac also states that the Cherokee name for the February full moon was, the Hungry Moon, giving some evidence that heavy snowfall would have made food hard to come by at this time of the year.

According to EarthSky in the Northern Hemisphere, the path of the Snow Moon across the night sky is a welcome reminder of the longer summer days to come. The snow moon means that we are in a season of change. With this change we can see longer and warmer days ahead.
